How could we missed out Smokehouse’s signature afternoon tea set, a three tiered platter of exquisitely prepared sandwiches, scones and delicate pastries? The scones were light, flavorful and made from real butter. These were amazing! Seriously, the best scones. Try one.

Personally I loved the scones here. It's an English biscuit made with flour, butter, sugar, milk or cream and baking powder. Eaten with cream or jam, it's heavenly over a cup of tea while you sigh and enjoyed the quiet afternoon around you. The scones here are freshly baked everyday to be accompany with freshly homemade strawberry jam

The Smokehouse Restaurant Kuala Lumpur

The History of The Smokehouse

The hotel in Cameron Highlands was originally opened during the Christmas of 1937 by the Englishman Douglas Warin, Esq. the original establishment has six rooms available for accommodation and was mainly meant for homesick British expatriates who in those days only returned home once in eight years.

During the Japanese occupation, the premises were used as an Officer’s mess for the Imperial Japanese Army. The intervening war years and the associated deprivation must have taken a toll on the enthusiasm and staying power of this original hotel family as they soon sold out to a Scotsman, a Mr McDonald who ran the hotel in conjunction with a nearby bungalow. Again, this did not last long and the property was sold to yet another Englishman, Mr Cowling. He immediately began to expand the hotel but unfortunately due to lack of funds the result was not entirely satisfactory. This gentleman subsequently sold it after about five years to a fellow Englishman Lt. Col. Stanley Foster, Esq.

After owning and running the place for slightly more than ten years, Foster sold it in 1977 to a Malaysian Chinese, Peter K H Lee, Esq.

In 1985 upon the invitation of the Fraser’s Hill Development Corporation, work began on the historical Red Cross Bungalow in Fraser’s Hill and opened its door as Ye Olde Smokehouse Fraser’s Hill in 1988.

Just like stepping back in time, Ye Olde Smokehouse Hotel in Fraser’s Hill offers a true gateway and is popular with expatriates and Malaysians, especially those who have studied or worked abroad. In a beautiful historic building with a relaxing, homely feel, there are 16 individually furnished suites/rooms, and English restaurant and a bar with a real fireplace to keep warm during those “winter” evenings.

Each of the guest rooms is filled with antique furniture, four posters beds and paintings, overlooking well-tended grounds. A chance to sample real English-style country living, with tea and homemade scones with our own strawberry jam, butter and freshly whipped cream every afternoon. Guests can wake up to the sound of birdsong, have breakfast outside on the terrace, and enjoy country house hospitality from our friendly staff.

In 1992, the Smokehouse Restaurant Kuala Lumpur offers the same country house hospitality and traditional British cuisine to the KL city folks. It has remained in the vicinity of the KLCC up until May 2009 where it is now located in the affluent Bangsar community.

Ye Olde Smokehouse Fraser’s Hill and The Smokehouse Restaurant Kuala Lumpur is currently owned and opened by D & H Country Homes Sdn Bhd who is committed to bring you fine country house hospitality as has always been since 1937.
